NAPA Autotech Quick Reference Training Best Practices

We asked the top NAPA automotive shops what makes their training program successful.
The best shops do the following…
    1.  Establish a training plan
    ·         Management provides training avenues for all team members.
    ·         Make someone the lead person for the shop to coordinate training.
    ·         Start with assessments to wisely use training time.
    2.  Work towards a minimum 40 hours per year
    ·         Start with at least 10 hours of classroom training
    ·         30 hours of instructor-led training
    ·         10 hours of online courses
    ·         ASE certifications required within one year of assignment by owner
    ·         Combination of Management, Technical, ASE Test Prep, and Safety Training
    3.  Require and compensate training
    ·         Make training part of the requirements of the job
    ·         Part of employee handbook and sign an acknowledgement
    ·         Employ a training wage (can be lower than regular rate)
Note:  Refer to your state’s employment laws to ensure proper compensation of training time.
    4.   Encourage and recognize training completions
    ·         Hang certificates
    ·         Give a bonus or conduct a wage review after completions
